Diagnostic Laboratory

Oak Ridge Animal Hospital: Diagnostic Laboratory

Like people, pets are prone to getting sick as well. When pets start to get sick, it is important for people to know where to take their furry friends for care. There are a number of factors to consider ranging from the distance to the hospital, the experience of the vet, their area of specialty, and the capabilities of their lab. The diagnostic laboratory is often overlooked; however, this can play a major role in the diagnostic and treatment abilities of the animal hospital. The team from the Oak Ridge Animal Hospital located in Greensboro is here to help everyone understand just why the veterinarian diagnostic laboratory is so important. It can make a big difference in the care of your pet.

The Capabilities of a Diagnostic Laboratory

When it comes time to have the pet evaluated by the veterinarian, this is going to start with the history and physical exam. The vet is going to want to know about the symptoms that the animal has been experiencing as well as the medicines that the pet might have taken. Then, it might be time to draw some blood or other fluids. Some of the tests that the lab should be able to run include:

A Complete Blood Count: This is one of the most basic tests. This is done to measure the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets of the animal. This can show signs of an infection, anemia, or even a blood clotting disorder.

Electrolytes: The lab should also have the ability to run some electrolytes. This is done to measure certain ions such as sodium, potassium chloride, and bicarbonate (acid) levels. These can show signs of dehydration or a kidney issue.

A Urine Screen: A basic lab should also be able to test the urine to look for signs of urinary tract infection or kidney damage of some sort. The lab should also have the ability to draw the urine using a catheter to make sure that it is sterile.

The results of these lab tests are going to play a major role in deciding what type of treatment is necessary. Make sure that the hospital can run these tests.
